The 2012 Chevrolet Silverado is the best full-size pickup if you're
New Hampshire Chevy diehard immune to the lure of fancy, non-truck like gizmos of the new Ford and Dodge trucks.
The 2012 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 will almost certainly be a virtual carry-over of the 2011 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. General Motors is devoting much of its big-truck energy to launching the redesigned heavy-duty 2011 Silverado/Sierra 2500- and 3500-series models. That leaves the 2012 Silverado 1500 to soldier on for at least one more season with a basic design that dates to model-year 2007.
Styling: The 2012 Chevy Silverado's styling will stand pat, relying for one final year. Its clean lines are perhaps too familiar by now but nonetheless are less flamboyant that those of the Ford F-150 and Dodge Ram 1500. Chevy could begin to phase out some versions of this Silverado 1500 generation as the 2012 model year progresses and production transitions to the redesigned 2013 replacement. But chances are strong that you'll see the 2012 Silverado 1500 in three cab choices: the two-door regular-cab; the extended cab with small, rear-hinged back doors; and the crew cab with four conventional doors. The regular cab seats up to three. The extended and crews have seating for up to six. Cargo beds for 2012 regular-cabs should again come in 5-foot-8-inch and 8-foot lengths. Extended cabs are likely to offer those plus a 6-foot-6-inch box. Crew Cabs would use the 5-8 box. Exterior styling will continue to dress up as you climb the model line. The 2012 roster should again start with the basic Work Truck (WT) and ascend through LS, LT, and LTZ trim levels. Chevy could, however, consolidate the lineup or even offer a special close-out trim level, depending on its strategy for marketing the swan-song 2012 Silverado 1500. If it continues to offer a gas-electric Silverado, the Hybrid would again lend its aerodynamic front fascia to the Silverado 1500 XFE (Xtra Fuel Economy) model; both would probably continue only as crew cabs. Chevy's had good success offering Silverado with a choice of plain and fancy cabin décors and the 2012 is likely to follow suit. That means the 2012 Silverado WT, LS, and LT models would get a basic design Chevy calls "pure pickup." The 2012 LTZ would continue with a "luxury inspired" interior that shares its dashboard design with the Chevy Tahoe and Suburban SUVs, which are built off the Silverado.
Mechanical: The
2012 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 won't get any major mechanical additions, though a subtraction or two may be in the cards based on conditions dictated by production start-up of the re-engineered 2013 Silverado. If Chevy continues with the full engine lineup, it'll preserve one area in which the current Silverado is highly competitive with its newer rivals. That would mean the 2012 Silverado would feature a base V-6 engine and a choice of four V-8s, including a gas-electric hybrid. Historically, the most popular engine choice is the versatile 5.3-liter V-8, which should continue at 315 horsepower and 335 pound-feet of torque. The 5.3 has been available on all body styles and saves gas by employing GM's Active Fuel Management system. This automatically switches between eight and four cylinders, depending on power demands. The 2012 Silverado's V-6 would continue at 195 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. Also returning would be V-8s of 4.8 liters (302 horsepower/305 pound-feet) and 6.2 liters (403 and 417). The V-6 and 4.8-liter V-8 have used a four-speed automatic transmission, the other engines a more efficient six-speed automatic. A maximum towing capacity of around 10,600 pounds should keep the 2012 Silverado in the hauling hunt; it's achieved in the 6.2-liter-V-8 crew cab with the optional trailering package. The 2012 Silverado Hybrid would return with an Active Fuel Management 6.0-liter V-8 in combination with electric motors housed in the transmission casing. Total horsepower should remain 332 and towing capacity 6,100 pounds. The hybrid system self-charges its nickel-metal hydride battery pack and can propel the truck up to 30 mph on electricity alone. The electric motors allow the V-8 to more frequently take advantage of four-cylinder mode; they also assist during acceleration. Silverado Hybrid has been available with two or four-wheel drive and uses a continuously variable transmission.
Features: Chevy's done an admirable job keeping Silverado's equipment list stocked with useful items. GM's StabiliTrack antiskid system is standard on every Silverado, as are head-protecting curtain side airbags. Silverado and Sierra, along with the Ram 1500, are also the only full-size pickups to offer four-wheel-drive that can be left engaged on all surfaces. GM calls its system Autotrac. It's an advantage on damp pavement, when pickups with empty or lightly laden beds can suffer poor rear-tire grip. Like Silverado's basic part-time 4WD system, Autotrac has low-range gearing. Each 2012 Silverado audio system except the most basic setup should continue to include USB iPod connectivity. A rearview backup camera will remain available, as will leather upholstery, a navigation system, OnStar communications, rear-seat DVD entertainment, 12-way heated power front seats, remote engine start, a power sliding rear window, and Bluetooth cell-phone link. Chevy could dial back on the array of suspension setups offered on the 2012 Silverado. However, each setup has a clear purpose and has developed a following that identifies with Z83 and Z85 comfort-oriented tuning, Z71 off-road hardware, or the Z60 sporty-handling package. Incidentally, the "1500" in Silverado's name refers to its general payload category, known popularly as the half-ton class. The Silverado 2500 qualifies for the three-quarter-ton class, with the 3500 designated a one-ton truck. Following a similar convention, Ford's full-size pickups march through F-150, F-250, and F-350 designations while Dodge's Ram follows the 1500, 2500, 3500 form.
